Former Pakistan captain Rashid Latif has stirred controversy by claiming that Afghanistan’s star spinner, Rashid Khan, is a greater cricketer than legendary pacer Wasim Akram. Latif praised Rashid’s impact on Afghanistan cricket, stating that his achievements have given the team global recognition.
Since his international debut in 2015, Rashid has taken 45 wickets in Tests, 198 in ODIs, and 161 in T20Is. He also holds the record for the most wickets in T20 cricket, with 633 scalps. Latif emphasized Rashid’s influence, saying, “He has helped Afghanistan gain recognition. His stature is bigger than Wasim Akram’s.”

Despite Latif’s bold claim, Wasim Akram’s legacy remains unmatched, with 414 Test wickets and 502 ODI wickets. Akram, regarded as one of the greatest fast bowlers in history, played a key role in Pakistan’s 1992 World Cup victory.
Rashid Khan recently led Afghanistan to a historic semi-final appearance in the 2024 T20 World Cup and will be a key figure in the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Afghanistan, placed in a tough group with South Africa, Australia, and England, will look to continue their impressive rise in world cricket.
