Indian cricketer Yuzvendra Chahal and choreographer Dhanashree Verma officially ended their marriage on March 20, 2025, following months of speculation and reports of them living separately.
According to senior journalist Vickey Lalwani, the primary reason behind their divorce was a disagreement over relocating from Haryana to Mumbai.
The couple, who got married in December 2020, initially lived with Chahal’s family in Haryana. Although they frequently visited Mumbai, Dhanashree was reportedly dissatisfied with the arrangement and wanted to move there permanently.

“This Mumbai-Haryana dispute was a major factor in the breakdown of this highly publicized marriage,” Vickey Lalwani shared in a social media post, adding that Chahal was firm on staying close to his parents and did not wish to relocate.
Lalwani further revealed that their contrasting personalities played a role in their separation, as they struggled to find common ground, ultimately leading to irreconcilable differences.
Legal records confirm that both filed for divorce in Mumbai. Due to Chahal’s IPL commitments, their legal team sought and obtained an exemption from the mandatory six-month cooling-off period. The Bandra Family Court finalized their divorce just before Chahal resumed his cricket schedule.
Following the court’s decision, Chahal’s lawyer, Nitin Kumar Gupta, told ANI, “The court has approved the joint petition, and the two are no longer husband and wife.”
As part of the settlement, Chahal agreed to pay alimony to Dhanashree, though specific details were not disclosed. Reports suggest the amount was approximately ₹4.75 crore ($550,000).
Speculation about their troubled relationship had been circulating for months. While the couple made public appearances together early in their marriage, rumors of their separation surfaced in mid-2022 when they allegedly started living apart. Their recent court appearance confirmed the official dissolution of their marriage.
Meanwhile, a viral social media post branding Dhanashree a “gold digger” following the divorce has sparked controversy. The debate intensified after Ritika Sajdeh, wife of Indian cricket captain Rohit Sharma, reportedly liked the post.
The video, shared by a cricket fan page, featured journalist Shubhankar Mishra criticizing Dhanashree for accepting a large alimony sum while claiming to be a “self-made woman.” He also referenced Chahal’s recent public appearance wearing a T-shirt that read, “Be Your Own Sugar Daddy.”
