Northern China is preparing for extreme winds this weekend, prompting authorities to take precautionary measures. Workers have been instructed to rush home, schools have been closed, and outdoor events have been canceled as millions are advised to stay indoors.
State media reports caution that individuals weighing less than 50kg (110lbs) may be at risk of being “easily blown away” due to the high winds, which are expected to reach speeds of 150kph (93mph) from Friday to Sunday. These gales, driven by a cold vortex from Mongolia, will impact Beijing, Tianjin, and the Hebei region.

For the first time in a decade, Beijing has issued an orange alert for high winds, the second-highest warning in the country’s weather system. While strong winds from Mongolia are common at this time of year, these winds are predicted to be stronger than any in recent years. Temperatures in Beijing could plummet by 13°C within 24 hours, with the worst winds expected on Saturday.
The Beijing Meteorological Service described the approaching winds as “extreme,” with widespread and long-lasting impacts. Winds are forecast to reach levels 11 to 13 on China’s wind scale, which measures wind speeds from level 1 to 17. Level 11 winds can cause “serious damage,” while level 12 winds bring “extreme destruction.”
Several sporting events, including the world’s first humanoid robot half marathon, have been rescheduled, and numerous parks and tourist attractions have been closed. Construction and train services have also been suspended. Thousands of trees in the city have been reinforced to prevent falling. Authorities are advising against venturing into mountains and forests, where the winds will be especially fierce.
Despite the disruptions, some residents are finding humor in the situation. A Weibo user joked, “This wind is so considerate, it starts Friday evening and ends Sunday, without affecting work on Monday.” Hashtags about the strong winds and the warning that those under 50kg could be swept away have been trending on Chinese social media. One user humorously added, “I eat so much all the time, just for this day.”
Additionally, Beijing has issued a forest fire alert and banned outdoor fires due to the wind. The winds are expected to begin easing by Sunday night.
