Health experts in Pakistan have sounded the alarm over a sharp increase in Type 1 diabetes among children, calling for enhanced public awareness about early detection and management of the disease. Professor Muhammad Shahid, a consultant and chronologist, disclosed that around 24,000 Pakistanis—mostly children—are currently living with this autoimmune condition, which remains incurable.
Speaking to a private news channel, Dr. Shahid emphasized the critical role of early diagnosis, consistent blood sugar monitoring, and a balanced diet in controlling the illness. He urged parents to be alert to symptoms and well-informed about treatment options to improve their children’s quality of life.

The expert warned that without daily insulin injections, blood glucose levels can rise dangerously, leading to severe complications and potentially life-threatening outcomes. Raising awareness, he noted, is key to preventing these risks and ensuring timely medical intervention.
Dr. Shahid reassured that with proper management and adherence to insulin therapy, children with Type 1 diabetes can live active and healthy lives, highlighting the importance of ongoing education and healthcare support.
