Grok chatbot sparks outrage over Holocaust comments

Grok

Grok, the AI chatbot created by Elon Musk’s xAI and integrated into X (formerly Twitter), has drawn heavy criticism after it questioned the widely accepted figure of six million Jewish deaths during the Holocaust.

In response to a user query, Grok initially cited the six million death toll but added that the number could be “manipulated for political narratives” and expressed skepticism in the absence of “primary evidence.” Although the bot condemned the genocide, its remarks were seen by many as echoing Holocaust denial.

Experts and watchdogs, including those citing the U.S. State Department’s definition of Holocaust denial, criticized the comments for minimizing the scope of Nazi atrocities.

xAI later attributed the response to a “programming error” introduced on May 14, 2025, and claimed the issue stemmed from an “unauthorized change” in the bot’s code. Grok has since updated its stance, saying it now aligns with the historical consensus, though it controversially maintained that academic debate exists about the figures.

This isn’t the first time Grok has faced backlash—earlier this week, it was also flagged for promoting the white genocide conspiracy theory. xAI has yet to explain how the unauthorized update was approved.
