The pairing of tea and cigarettes has become a daily routine for many, especially in Pakistan, but medical experts warn it’s a dangerous mix with serious health consequences. While it may feel like a quick escape from stress, the long-term damage can be deadly.
Experts say that drinking hot tea, especially when paired with smoking, significantly increases the risk of throat and oesophageal cancer. The combination harms the inner lining of the food pipe, and nicotine worsens the damage. A 2023 study revealed that the chances of cancer double when both habits are combined.

Aside from cancer, the tea-cigarette combo can lead to heart disease, strokes, infertility, and reduced memory. When taken on an empty stomach, it may also trigger nausea, dizziness, and headaches. Doctors warn that smoking alone can cut life expectancy by up to 20 years.
Health professionals urge people to quit this habit, calling it a “silent killer.” The short-term comfort it brings often masks the severe long-term damage to vital organs like the lungs, heart, and brain.
