Apple’s upcoming iOS 26 update, expected to roll out later this year, will enable iPhone users in the United States to create a digital ID derived from their U.S. passport. This new capability will be integrated into the Wallet app, further aligning with Apple’s vision of turning the iPhone into an all-in-one digital tool for identity, payments, and travel.
Although this digital ID won’t replace physical passports entirely, it will function as a valid form of identification in specific contexts — such as select airport security checkpoints and various digital applications.

For Domestic Use Only — So Far
Despite the exciting potential, the feature is currently restricted to domestic use. Apple has clarified that the digital ID will not be valid for international travel. Instead, it will be accepted at an expanding number of TSA checkpoints within the United States, allowing travelers to present identification via their iPhones.
As of now, digital IDs are accepted at 14 airports across the U.S. and Puerto Rico, with more expected to come on board as the system gains traction.
Built on Existing Digital License Functionality
This passport-based digital ID builds upon Apple’s earlier rollout of digital driver’s licenses introduced with iOS 16. Currently, residents in nine U.S. states — including Arizona, California, Colorado, Georgia, Hawaii, Iowa, Maryland, New Mexico, and Ohio — as well as Puerto Rico, can store their state-issued driver’s licenses in Apple Wallet. More states are expected to support the feature in the future.
How It Will Work
Though not yet available in beta versions of iOS 26, the digital passport ID feature is expected to follow a setup process similar to that of the driver’s license feature. Users will likely scan their physical passport, submit real-time selfies, and verify their identity using Face ID. This data will be securely submitted to the U.S. Department of State for verification before the digital ID is activated.
Beyond Travel: Broad Utility in Apps
The new digital ID will also be functional in various mobile apps, allowing users to verify their identity or age for activities such as online credit applications, banking services, or accessing age-restricted platforms. This move further enhances the Wallet app’s integration into everyday digital life.
Launch Limited to U.S. Passport Holders
Initially, the digital ID feature will be available only to U.S. passport holders. Apple has not provided any timeline or confirmation regarding potential international expansion. Such a rollout would depend on agreements with other governments and alignment with global privacy and identity regulations.
Moving Towards a Digital Lifestyle
This latest development marks another step in Apple’s broader mission to digitize everyday essentials — from credit cards to car keys and now official IDs. With the iOS 26 update, the iPhone continues to evolve into a centralized, secure hub for identity and daily life.
Physical Passports Still Required for International Travel
Despite the convenience, Apple reminds users that physical passports are still mandatory for international travel. The digital passport ID is meant to supplement traditional documents, not replace them — at least for now.
