UK Member of Parliament Zarah Sultana has officially left the Labour Party after 14 years. She made the announcement on Friday, stating that she will co-found a new left-wing political party alongside former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn.
In her resignation statement, Zarah Sultana said the new party would be led by independent MPs, activists, and campaigners. She criticized Labourโs current leadership, especially over its position on the ongoing conflict in Gaza. Sultana said, โThis government is an active participant in genocide,โ referring to UK support for Israel’s actions.
One of her main reasons for quitting Labour was Keir Starmerโs stance on the Gaza war. She believes it no longer reflects the values of justice and peace that many Britons support.
Zarah Sultana also pointed to the UKโs rising economic inequality. โJust 50 families now own more wealth than half the UK population,โ she said, calling for a fairer system that works for everyone.
Sultana had previously been suspended from the Labour parliamentary party for voting against the two-child benefit cap, defying the party line.
The formation of this new party is being seen as a major moment in UK politics. Experts believe it could attract other Labour MPs who feel disconnected from the partyโs direction under Starmer. Some speculate it may form a small yet impactful group in Parliament.
Zarah Sultana has been a consistent critic of the UKโs military and political ties with Israel. She strongly opposed Parliamentโs decision to label Palestine Action, a protest group, as a terrorist organisation. She claimed the government is targeting people who are standing up for Palestinian rights.
โWeโre not going to take this anymore,โ Sultana declared, stressing the need for change and unity in the country.
The official launch date of the new party is yet to be announced. However, the move marks a significant shift in the UKโs political landscape, with Zarah Sultana playing a key role in shaping the future of left-wing politics.
