Chinese automotive giant BYD made a significant move in Pakistan’s automotive market on Friday by launching the Shark 6, the country’s first plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) pickup truck.
The event, held in Karachi, was aimed at showcasing the potential of PHEV technology and innovation in Pakistan. Priced at Rs19.95 crore, the Shark 6 is being hailed as a revolutionary vehicle offering an eco-friendly solution for both urban and commercial use.
Danish Khaliq, Vice President of Sales and Strategy at BYD Pakistan, emphasized the importance of the Shark 6 during the launch event. “This is not just a hybrid upgrade,” he said. “This is a major leap forward in sustainable transportation.” The Shark 6 features an electric motor that carries the primary load, with the internal combustion engine acting mainly as a supportive power source.
The new model is designed to cater to the growing demand for high-performance, environmentally friendly pickup trucks in Pakistan, offering an ideal alternative for those looking for advanced hybrid mobility options.
The Shark 6 is equipped with a 1.5-litre high-efficiency engine, paired with a large battery unit, allowing it to operate in full-electric mode for short urban commutes. For longer trips, the hybrid system ensures power and fuel efficiency.
Li Jian, the Country Head of BYD Pakistan, commented on the significance of the launch, stating, “This model represents a new category in Pakistan’s auto industry.”
He also highlighted the company’s extensive experience, mentioning that BYD has been developing dual-mode technology for over two decades. The company’s first commercial PHEV vehicle was launched globally in 2008.
Although BYD has not yet disclosed a timeline for mass availability, the launch of the Shark 6 marks an important step in the company’s strategy to promote cleaner transport solutions and further hybrid adoption in South Asia.
As fuel prices rise and environmental concerns grow, BYD’s entry into the Pakistani market could signal the beginning of a new era for hybrid vehicles in the region.
Founded in 1995, BYD has become one of the world’s leading manufacturers of electric and hybrid vehicles, with a strong presence in China, Europe, and Southeast Asia.
The company’s entry into Pakistan’s market is expected to pave the way for further innovations in the country’s automotive sector.
