World’s Largest Cruise Ship Completes Construction and Sets Sail for Sea Trials

The construction of the world’s largest cruise ship, Icon of the Seas, has been completed at a shipyard in Finland, and it has embarked on its first round of sea trials. The mammoth vessel, measuring 365 meters long and weighing an estimated 250,800 tonnes, is expected to be delivered in October of this year.

Operated by Royal Caribbean International, Icon of the Seas will have a capacity to comfortably accommodate 5,610 passengers and 2,350 crew members when it begins sailing in the Caribbean waters from January 2024. One of its standout features will be the world’s largest waterpark at sea, called Category 6, boasting six record-breaking water slides. Additionally, the ship will offer seven pools and nine whirlpools for those seeking a more relaxed experience.

Built by Meyer Turku shipyard in Finland, one of Europe’s prominent shipbuilders, Icon of the Seas is touted as Royal Caribbean International’s pinnacle of evolution in cruise ships. Incorporating the latest technology and drawing from the company’s 50-year history, the vessel aims to provide the ultimate family vacation experience.

The sea trials, which took place on June 22, involved testing the ship’s main engines, hull, brake systems, steering, as well as noise and vibration levels. Despite a slight delay due to wind conditions, the trials were successfully conducted, adhering to the scheduled timeline. The ship promises over 40 dining, drinking, and entertainment options, many of which are included in the cruise fare. With 20 decks and eight neighborhoods, it aims to cater to diverse vacationers, including areas dedicated to young families and Royal Caribbean International’s first dueling pianos bar for adults.

Icon of the Seas features 28 different types of accommodations, with a focus on family-friendly options, ocean views, and ample space for group travelers. It marks Royal Caribbean International’s inaugural ship powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG) and fuel cell technology, aligning with the company’s commitment to a clean-energy future.

The ship’s impressive popularity is evident in record-breaking advance sales, generating significant buzz within the industry. A second set of sea trials is planned for later in 2023. Royal Caribbean International intends to offer seven-night Eastern and Western Caribbean vacations from Miami throughout the year, with each itinerary including a visit to the company’s award-winning private island destination, Perfect Day at CocoCay, as well as its new expansion, Hideaway Beach.
