Islamabad to Become Pakistan’s First Free Wi-Fi City Under CDA Plan

Islamabad to Become Pakistan’s First Free Wi-Fi City Under CDA Plan

Islamabad is set to become Pakistan’s first Free Wi-Fi City, as the Capital Development Authority (CDA) launches a new initiative to provide free internet access at major public locations. The project aims to improve digital connectivity for both residents and visitors.

In the first phase, the CDA will install free Wi-Fi at 30 key sites across the federal capital. These include metro and feeder bus stations, public parks, and other busy public areas. The initiative is designed to make internet services more accessible, especially for commuters and students.

CDA Chairman Muhammad Ali Randhawa confirmed that the National Telecommunication Corporation (NTC) will manage and maintain the system.

CDA’s technical teams will also provide support to ensure smooth operations. He stressed that the project will focus on sustainability, not just accessibility.

To achieve this, the CDA is working on a marketing and revenue model. This model will generate income to cover upgrades, future expansions, and regular maintenance of the free Wi-Fi service.

Officials believe that a self-sustaining system will ensure that Islamabad’s digital transformation continues without interruptions.

The Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) Administrator highlighted that the Free Wi-Fi City project is part of broader plans to transform Islamabad into a modern smart city.

The goal is to improve public access to digital services, boost connectivity, and encourage the use of modern technology in everyday life.

With this development, Islamabad is taking a major step toward becoming a digitally connected city. If successful, the model could also be introduced in other parts of the country, making free internet access a reality for millions of Pakistanis.
