Imran Khan’s Nephew Shershah Sent to Jail on Judicial Remand

Imran Khan's Nephew Shershah Sent to Jail on Judicial Remand

LAHORE: An anti-terrorism court (ATC) in Lahore on Thursday granted a 14-day judicial remand of Imran Khan’s nephew Shershah, sending him to jail in connection with the May 9 riots case.

Shershah, son of Aleema Khan, was arrested on August 22, a day after the arrest of another of Imran Khan’s nephews, Shahrez Khan. Both are accused of involvement in the Jinnah House attack during the May 9 violence, which followed the arrest of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder in a corruption case.

The May 9 riots witnessed widespread unrest across the country, including attacks on state and military installations. The Jinnah House incident became one of the most significant cases from the unrest.

Following the expiry of his five-day physical remand, Shershah was presented before the ATC today. Police requested a 30-day physical remand, presenting a video that allegedly showed the suspect standing with Hassan Niazi, also Imran Khan’s nephew, during the riots.

However, Shershah’s lawyer, Salman Akram Raja, argued that appearing in a video did not prove any crime. He stressed that the evidence presented was insufficient to justify further remand.

After hearing arguments from both sides, ATC Judge Manzar Ali Gill rejected the police request and instead approved a 14-day judicial remand.

According to sources, Imran Khan’s nephew is accused of arson, vandalism, torching a police van, and running an anti-state digital campaign. He allegedly went into hiding after the riots and later fled to London, where he remained for nearly two years before returning.

Both Shershah and Shahrez are now facing serious charges linked to the May 9 events, with investigations and trials expected to continue in the coming weeks.
