Heavy monsoon rains have devastated Gujrat, leaving large parts of the city and nearby towns submerged. The downpour disrupted daily life, stranded residents, and paralyzed road traffic.
In just 24 hours, 506 millimeters of rain fell, breaking all previous records. Streets and markets quickly turned into lakes, as urban flooding swept through several localities. Madina Syedan, Kutchery Chowk, Gondal Chowk, Zahoor Elahi Stadium, and Jail Chowk are now under several feet of water. Many houses and cars are still submerged.
Emergency mosque announcements urged residents to move to safer ground. Despite warnings, thousands remain stranded as the district administration struggles to respond. Panic and fear have spread among families trapped in their homes.
The situation worsened when Nala Bhandar and Nala Bhimber overflowed into residential areas. Floodwaters swept away household belongings and even an entire house.
Government offices, including the Sessions Court complex, are also flooded. Traders face heavy financial losses as shops and markets remain underwater.
Experts describe this disaster as the worst rainfall event in the history of Gujrat and the wider Gujranwala Division. They warn that the crisis exposes the cityβs weak infrastructure and lack of preparation for extreme weather.
This local emergency comes amid widespread flooding across Pakistan. In the past two months, over 800 people have lost their lives, including 16 deaths in just the last two days. Punjab alone has seen more than 2,300 villages submerged, forcing 35,000 people from their homes.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is the hardest hit, with nearly 500 deaths. Punjab follows closely, with widespread destruction to roads, bridges, and livestock. Nationwide, floods have destroyed 238 bridges, 660 kilometers of roads, and more than 9,000 houses.
The record-breaking rainfall in Gujrat serves as a grim reminder of the dangers posed by climate change and fragile city planning.
