Global Sumud Flotilla Moves Toward Tunisia Despite Israeli Threats

The Global Sumud Flotilla has left Menorca and is heading toward Tunisia to challenge the blockade on Gaza, organizers said Friday. The mission aims to deliver humanitarian aid and raise global awareness of the suffering of Palestinians under siege.

Most vessels are already en route to Tunis, while two boats undergoing storm-related repairs in Barcelona will rejoin soon. Organizers confirmed that safety checks and operational procedures are being carried out before the next stage of the voyage.

On September 7, dozens of vessels are expected to depart from Tunis and Catania in Sicily. They will join the Barcelona fleet in what the coalition described as a β€œpowerful, united action” against the blockade.

The flotilla has received wide international backing. Lawmakers, unions, and rights groups have voiced support. More than 100 current and former elected officials signed a joint letter urging the creation of a humanitarian corridor to Gaza and international protection for the civilian mission.

Francesca Albanese, UN special rapporteur on the occupied Palestinian territories, said the flotilla β€œfully complies with international law.” Dockworkers in Genoa, Italy, also pledged to block shipments to Israel if the boats face obstruction.

Colombian President Gustavo Petro extended solidarity, praising participants for their courage. β€œYou have chosen the most difficult and dangerous path: that of action in the face of brutal violence,” he said.

Call for Protection

Organizers warned of possible Israeli threats against the flotilla and urged the UN and international community to guarantee safe passage. They called for protection from unlawful detention and emphasized Palestinians’ right to humanitarian maritime access.

The coalition stressed that the mission is not backed by governments or corporations but funded through donations from families, communities, and grassroots groups worldwide.

β€œOur coalition unites doctors, lawyers, artists, activists, and ordinary people,” the statement read. β€œWe believe Palestinians deserve dignity, freedom, and humanity.”

The appeal comes as Gaza enters its 700th day of war. Israel’s campaign has killed more than 64,200 Palestinians and left the enclave facing famine. Despite Israeli threats, the flotilla’s mission continues with growing global support.
