The Punjab Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued a new PDMA alert warning of heavy rains across Punjab. The authority said the 10th monsoon spell will continue until September 9, raising concerns of urban flooding and river overflows.
Widespread rainfall expected
According to the PDMA, strong showers are forecast in Rawalpindi, Murree, Galiyat, Attock, Chakwal, Jhelum, Gujrat, Gujranwala, Sialkot, and Lahore. Rainfall is also likely in Narowal, Hafizabad, Jhang, Sargodha, Okara, Sahiwal, Kasur, and Mianwali. Southern districts including Multan, Dera Ghazi Khan, and Rajanpur may also face heavy rains.
Risk of flooding and overflows
The PDMA alert warned of possible flash floods in the riverine areas of Dera Ghazi Khan between September 6 and 9. Rivers Chenab, Ravi, and Sutlej are already experiencing rising water levels. Officials cautioned that urban drains in major cities could overflow due to intense downpours.
Departments on high alert
Commissioners, deputy commissioners, and district officers have been instructed to stay vigilant. The health, irrigation, communication, local government, and livestock departments have also been placed on alert for emergency response.
Rescue and relief efforts
PDMA Director General Irfan Ali Kathia said more than two million people have been rescued across Punjab. Over 1.5 million cattle have also been shifted to safer places. Around 423 relief camps have been set up to provide food, shelter, and medical aid. So far, more than 132,000 people have received medical treatment.
Sadly, 50 people have lost their lives due to floods. The Punjab government has announced Rs1 million assistance for each affected family.
Situation in Gujrat and Sialkot
The DG said Gujrat is experiencing severe flooding, but rescue teams are actively draining water. Conditions are expected to improve within 12 to 18 hours as water levels decline.
This PDMA alert serves as a strong reminder for authorities and citizens to remain prepared as the monsoon spell continues.
