Battery Energy Storage Seen as Key to Pakistan’s Power Future

ISLAMABAD – Experts have stressed that Battery Energy storage systems can play a critical role in stabilizing Pakistan’s electricity grid and reducing loadshedding. They believe such technologies are essential for shifting towards a cleaner, more resilient energy future.

The views were shared at a policy seminar organized by the Pak-German Climate and Energy Partnership (PGCEP) and the Sustainable Development Policy Institute (SDPI), with support from German Development Cooperation. The seminar was titled “Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS): Applications and Impact on Demand Defection in the Power Sector of Pakistan.”

PGCEP Advisor Kim Brinkmann said Pakistan needs forward-looking policies and innovative financing to expand the power sector. She noted that battery storage is no longer a distant goal, but a growing reality.

Energy Finance Specialist Haneea Isaad highlighted global trends, pointing out that lithium-ion batteries are now widely used in homes, industries, and businesses. She said Pakistan’s installed BESS capacity rose from 4.1 GWh in January 2025 to more than 7 GWh within months.

Muhammad Zakria, Executive Director of System Operations, discussed the challenges of renewable energy integration. He said a 20 MW pilot project in Jhimpir shows how storage can help regulate frequency and address grid issues.

European expert Tobias Dertmann shared lessons from Europe, where battery systems now deliver more than 98% availability in national grids. Industry leaders from Huawei and Sungrow also urged the government to reduce duties and streamline imports to encourage private investment.

NEPRA Director General Imtiaz Hussain Baloch admitted that long-term planning has been missing in Pakistan’s power sector, stressing the urgent need for modern technologies.

Wrapping up the session, experts agreed that Battery Energy storage can become a cornerstone of Pakistan’s energy transition if backed by strong policies and collaborative efforts.
