PTA to Block All Unregistered Mobile Phones Across Pakistan

PTA to Block All Unregistered Mobile Phones Across Pakistan

ISLAMABAD – The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has announced strict measures to block all non-registered mobile devices from accessing local mobile networks.

The move is part of efforts to curb illegal phone usage, reduce smuggling, and strengthen national cybersecurity. PTA confirmed that mobile registration under the Device Identification Registration and Blocking System (DIRBS) is mandatory for every device. Phones not registered through this system will be treated as illegal in Pakistan.

According to officials, unregistered mobile phones are often linked with financial fraud, smuggling, and cybercrime. These devices pose risks not only to individual users but also to national security. PTA termed the decision an important milestone for Pakistan’s telecom sector.

Experts highlight that countries implementing similar policies have successfully reduced mobile phone smuggling and misuse. In Pakistan, this initiative is expected to generate both economic and social benefits while improving cybersecurity standards.

The PTA has urged citizens to verify the registration status of their phones using the DIRBS system. The process is simple and can be completed online. Failure to register may result in network suspension and even legal action against users of non-compliant devices.

Authorities stressed that the step is necessary to safeguard users and ensure that the telecom industry operates within legal and secure frameworks. With stricter controls in place, PTA believes Pakistan will see a significant drop in the circulation of illegal and smuggled phones.

The regulator also advised users to avoid purchasing mobile phones without confirming their registration status. Public awareness campaigns are being planned to ensure that all consumers understand the risks of using unregistered devices.

This development marks a new phase in Pakistan’s telecom regulation, where PTA is determined to protect both users and national interests.
