Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif inaugurated a new fleet of electric buses in Sahiwal on Monday.
After the inauguration, she boarded one of the electric buses and toured the city, highlighting the government’s commitment to clean and sustainable transport.
Last week, the Punjab government also launched eco-friendly electric buses in Sargodha. According to Maryam Nawaz, 60 buses will operate within Sargodha city, while 105 will run across the Sargodha division. To support this project, a modern charging station has been set up in the city.
Speaking at the ceremony, she noted that electric buses will provide affordable, reliable, and environmentally friendly travel for citizens. She emphasized that shifting towards sustainable public transport is crucial for reducing pollution and easing urban congestion.
Maryam Nawaz also touched upon ongoing relief efforts for flood-affected communities. She announced that livestock owners who lost animals in recent floods will receive financial compensation ranging between Rs200,000 and Rs500,000. Distribution of cheques is expected to begin within five days.
She highlighted that the floods impacted 27 cities and more than 5,000 villages. Relief operations enabled the safe evacuation of 2.5 million people and ensured the provision of food and basic supplies. The chief minister added that protecting livestock was also a priority, as it is a vital source of livelihood for rural families.
The launch of electric buses reflects Punjab’s push toward modern infrastructure while also addressing climate concerns. The initiative aims to improve public transport quality and set an example for other cities to follow.
