Iraq has told the United States that its territory must not be used as a launching point for military attacks against neighbouring countries, including Iran, as tensions in the Middle East raise fears of renewed conflict.

Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi communicated the country’s position during a telephone conversation with US President Donald Trump on Thursday, November 5, according to a statement from the Iraqi Prime Minister’s Office.

During the discussion, both leaders reviewed regional developments, security concerns and prospects for the next phase of the situation.

Al-Zaidi reaffirmed Iraq’s commitment to national sovereignty and stressed that Iraqi territory should not be used to launch attacks against neighbouring states.

He also called for diplomatic engagement and peaceful dialogue to protect regional security and prevent further escalation.

The conversation comes as Washington considers its next steps amid growing tensions with Iran and reports of possible renewed US military action.

Iraq, which shares a long border with Iran, faces significant security and economic risks if another regional conflict develops.

Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein has also warned against allowing the country to become involved in another war.

Speaking to Dijlah TV on Thursday, Hussein described the possibility of renewed US attacks on Iran as a serious concern and urged Iraqi armed groups not to participate in any Iranian retaliation.

He warned that drawing Iraqi society into another conflict could have disastrous consequences.

The foreign minister also said that neither Iraqi society nor the country’s armed forces were prepared for war.

Hussein stressed that Baghdad maintains relations with both Washington and Tehran and does not want Iraqi territory to become a battlefield for competing regional interests.

His remarks highlight the Iraqi government’s efforts to maintain a neutral position while protecting its national security and diplomatic relationships.

The latest statements come against the backdrop of wider tensions involving the United States, Israel and Iran. Any expansion of military operations could place additional pressure on neighbouring countries and threaten regional stability.

Iraq has particular reasons to avoid further escalation because its economy depends heavily on oil exports, which have been affected by disruptions to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.

The Iraqi government’s latest position therefore places emphasis on protecting national sovereignty, avoiding direct involvement in military operations and encouraging diplomatic solutions.
