The Sukkur Express train derails near Hyderabad on Monday morning, disrupting services on the Sukkur-Karachi route. The accident involved the 146 DN Sukkur Express, which was traveling from Sukkur to Karachi. Three bogies went off the track, causing panic among passengers.
According to railway officials, the Sukkur Express train derails while most passengers were asleep. Some travelers fell from their berths due to the sudden jolt. A few passengers sustained minor injuries, but no deaths have been reported so far.
The derailment led to the closure of the down track, halting train operations in the region. Authorities said train movement would remain suspended until the track is cleared. Passengers have been advised to expect delays on the Sukkur-Karachi route.
A rescue and technical team reached the site soon after the accident. Restoration work to re-rail the bogies began quickly and is expected to take about four hours. Officials said a detailed investigation is underway to identify the cause of the derailment.
This incident comes at a time when Pakistan Railways is working to improve safety and security. Last month, the Interior Ministry engaged the Federal Constabulary (FC) to help protect railway assets. The FC will assist in safeguarding railway tracks, stations, and rolling stock. It will also support operations to reclaim illegally occupied railway land in major cities.
Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi assured Railways Minister Hanif Abbasi of full federal support. The move aims to enhance safety for passengers and prevent disruptions like the one seen today when the Sukkur Express train derails.
Railway officials stressed that safety measures are being reviewed to avoid similar incidents in the future.
