Transporters have announced a 3% fare increase due to rising petrol and diesel prices, warning that further hikes may prompt more action.
Alliance President Malik Shahzad Awan stated that frequent fuel price surges are creating instability in the transport sector. He emphasized that operators are struggling to absorb increasing costs and cannot sustain further losses.
The fare increase comes shortly after the federal government revised petrol and diesel prices for the upcoming fortnight. Petrol has risen by Rs4.07 per litre, reaching Rs268.68, while high-speed diesel has increased by Rs4.04 per litre, now set at Rs276.81. The new rates took effect immediately upon notification from the Ministry of Finance.
Transport unions have indicated that the 3% fare increase is only a temporary measure to cope with rising operational costs. Malik Shahzad Awan warned that if the government does not reconsider the price hikes, unions are prepared to make another major decision regarding further fare adjustments.
This fare increase has sparked concerns among commuters, who may face higher daily transportation costs. However, transporters argue that without the adjustment, the sector could suffer significant financial losses.
Earlier, the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) announced a reduction in liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) prices for October. The price of an 11.8kg domestic LPG cylinder has been cut by Rs79.14, lowering the cost from Rs2,527 to Rs2,448. While LPG prices have decreased, the consistent petrol and diesel hikes continue to pressure the road transport sector.
Transport unions remain in discussions with the government to find a long-term solution for fuel-related operational challenges. Meanwhile, the recent fare increase serves as a short-term response to protect transportersโ revenue amid fluctuating fuel costs.
The government has yet to respond to the transportersโ warnings regarding potential further fare increases, leaving commuters and industry stakeholders closely monitoring the situation.
