Sarah Mullally Becomes First Female Archbishop of Canterbury in Historic Move

The Church of England has made history by appointing Sarah Mullally as the first female Archbishop of Canterbury. Her appointment was confirmed by the Crown Nominations Commission and officially approved by King Charles and Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

Mullally, 63, currently serves as Bishop of London and will formally take office in January 2026 after election and ceremonial confirmation. Her appointment marks a groundbreaking moment in the Church’s 1,400-year history, long dominated by male leadership.

Before entering the clergy, Mullally had a distinguished career in healthcare, serving as England’s Chief Nursing Officer. She later transitioned into church leadership, becoming Bishop of London in 2018, the third most senior role in the Church of England at the time.

Supporters of her appointment call it a historic and progressive step forward for the Church. However, some conservative Anglican groups, particularly overseas, have expressed concerns over the decision, citing traditional theological objections to female leadership.

Mullally has pledged to prioritize critical issues within the Church, including rebuilding trust after safeguarding failures, supporting abuse survivors, and strengthening accountability. She also recently condemned antisemitism following an attack on a Manchester synagogue, highlighting her commitment to social justice and community harmony.

On ethical matters, Mullally has voiced opposition to assisted dying legislation but continues to support inclusivity, dialogue, and care for all communities. She has also indicated she will maintain the Church’s traditional teaching on marriage while working toward unity among divided Anglican groups.

Her appointment follows the resignation of Archbishop Justin Welby, who faced mounting criticism over his handling of abuse scandals. The leadership transition comes at a pivotal time, as the Church seeks to restore public trust and reinforce its role as a moral voice in society.

As Sarah Mullally prepares to take the highest office in the Church of England, she will lead more than 85 million Anglicans worldwide. Her challenge will be to balance tradition with reform while uniting a global community at a time of division and change.
