The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has reported that the severe cyclonic storm Shakhti over the Arabian Sea has weakened into a cyclonic storm. The update was issued by the Cyclone Warning Center in Karachi on Monday.
According to the latest advisory, the storm is currently centered at Latitude 19.6Β°N and Longitude 60.4Β°E, about 910 kilometers southwest of Karachi. Meteorologists expect the cyclonic storm to continue moving east-southeastwards and weaken further into a depression within the next 24 hours.
The systemβs impact on weather in Pakistan is expected to be limited. Isolated light rain is likely in some coastal areas of Sindh and Balochistan under the stormβs influence. However, sea conditions will remain dangerous. Winds around Sindhβs coastal belt may reach 70β90 km/h, with higher gusts up to 100 km/h recorded near the storm center.
Authorities have strongly advised fishermen not to venture into the deep sea until 7 October due to high risks. The sea will remain rough to very rough during the next 24 hours, with gradually reducing intensity as the storm weakens.
The Cyclone Warning Center noted that wind speeds near the storm system could drop from 80β90 km/h to around 45β55 km/h as the system weakens. Despite this reduction, the sea is expected to remain high to very high in the northwest and west-central Arabian Sea for the coming day before calming gradually.
PMD officials said they are closely monitoring the cyclonic storm and will issue updates if there are any changes in its track or intensity. Citizens living in coastal districts are advised to stay alert to official weather advisories.
The weakening of Shakhti reduces the threat of widespread damage, but safety precautions remain necessary for those living near the coastline.
