Netflix, Red Chillies Issued Court Summons In Sameer Wankhede’s Defamation Suit

New Delhi – The Delhi High Court has formally summoned Netflix and Red Chillies Entertainment in response to allegations by former NCB officer Sameer Wankhede. He filed a defamation suit claiming a recent web series damages his reputation.

In his petition, Wankhede argues that the Netflix series The Ba**ds of Bollywood*, produced by Red Chillies, misrepresents him. He says that the portrayal is “false, malicious and defamatory.” The court’s action marks the start of legal proceedings.

The notice compels the defendants to respond to the defamation charges. It also demands clarifications about the content in question. Wankhede is asking for damages and an injunction against further portrayal that harms his image.

His lawsuit asserts that Netflix, Red Chillies issued court summons in Sameer Wankhede’s defamation suit because they created a narrative that defames him. He claims a character in the show bears resemblance to him and is depicted negatively.

The court has given Netflix, Red Chillies issued court summons in Sameer Wankhede’s defamation suit as a procedural step. Both parties must file their replies within a set time. The next hearing is already scheduled for October 30.

Wankhede had initially faced scrutiny over whether his suit was maintainable in Delhi. But the High Court now accepts a revised plea and has proceeded to issue the summons.

He also raised concern about social media posts. Wankhede said the series triggered trolling against him, his wife, and his sister. His legal team insists that these attacks worsen the harm to his public image.

Netflix and Red Chillies have not yet publicly responded to the summons. Their defence may focus on artistic freedom and public interest. They may also argue that their series is a dramatized version of events already in the public domain.

As the case unfolds, many will watch to see how courts balance creative expression and reputational rights. The question remains: will the series be altered or restricted based on the court’s decisions?
