The United Nations climate agency has issued a serious warning about rising global temperatures over the next five years. The latest report says there is a strong chance that another record-breaking year will occur before 2031.
According to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), there is an 86 percent chance that at least one year between 2026 and 2030 will become hotter than 2024. The agency said 2024 is currently the warmest year ever recorded.
The latest climate outlook shows that global temperatures are expected to remain at or near record highs through 2030. UN Warns that the ongoing trend of extreme heat is likely to continue across many parts of the world.
The WMO also noted that all 11 of the hottest years on record have occurred since 2015. Climate experts believe this pattern will continue in the coming years.
Leon Hermanson, lead author of the WMOโs Global Annual-to-Decadal Update, said a possible El Niรฑo event at the end of 2026 could increase global temperatures further. He explained that 2027 may become the next record-breaking year.
El Niรฑo is a natural climate event that warms ocean surface temperatures in the Pacific Ocean. It can affect weather patterns worldwide, including rainfall, winds, and heat levels.
The report predicts that average global temperatures from 2026 to 2030 may range between 1.3 and 1.9 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. UN Warns that there is also a 91 percent chance that temperatures will temporarily exceed the 1.5 degrees Celsius threshold during at least one year in that period.
In addition, the WMO said there is a 75 percent chance that the five-year average from 2026 to 2030 will remain above 1.5 degrees Celsius compared to the 1850-1900 average.
The Paris Climate Agreement aimed to keep global warming below 2 degrees Celsius and preferably under 1.5 degrees Celsius. Scientists measure these targets against temperatures before large-scale industrial pollution began.
Despite the alarming forecast, the WMO stated that it is still very unlikely for any single year to exceed 2 degrees Celsius of warming within the next five years.
The report also highlighted concerns about rising Arctic temperatures. Winter temperatures in the Arctic are expected to remain far above normal levels. Wetter conditions are expected in northern Europe, Alaska, and Siberia, while dry conditions may affect the Amazon region.
