The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has started hearing a petition calling for a ban on Lazawal Ishq, Pakistan’s first-ever dating show on YouTube. Critics claim the show promotes “obscenity” and “moral decline,” drawing attention nationwide.
The petition was filed by the Amaan Taraqqi Party, which argues that the program undermines cultural and social values. Justice Arbab Muhammad Tahir has issued notices to the federal government, the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA), the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), and other related institutions.
According to reports, Lazawal Ishq takes heavy inspiration from Love Island, a globally popular reality show where participants live together in a villa, form romantic connections, and complete various challenges. The Pakistani version follows a similar format, featuring young men and women on an island while exploring modern relationships.
The show, hosted by actor Ayesha Omar, has faced significant backlash since the release of its teaser. Many viewers compared it to Love Island, claiming that such content clashes with Pakistan’s cultural traditions. Others, however, have defended it as a bold and progressive step for local entertainment.
Petitioner Faiq requested the court to instruct PEMRA and PTA to closely monitor online platforms for similar content. He also asked for clarification on the role of the Council of Islamic Ideology (CII) in regulating digital media.
Responding to criticism, Ayesha Omar stated that Lazawal Ishq should not be labeled a dating show and that it aims to explore relationships in a respectful manner.
The controversy surrounding Pakistan’s Love Island-style show has sparked a broader debate about freedom of expression, modern values, and the boundaries of entertainment in the country. The IHC will continue hearing the case on November 20.
