After months of discussions between the Commerce Ministry and the Prime Ministerβs Office, the government is ready to restart the export and import of jewellery. The decision marks the end of a three-month suspension that left many gold traders and exporters uncertain about their business future.
According to a report by Business Recorder, the Prime Ministerβs Office has granted permission to the Commerce Ministry to resume gold trade. A detailed summary has been sent to the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the Cabinet for final approval. The ministry has also proposed that the three-month suspension period of SRO 760 be officially condoned to protect the commercial agreements made by traders during that time.
To avoid similar disruptions in the future, the ministry has recommended connecting gold trade to a strong verification mechanism. This will ensure better regulation and transparency in Pakistanβs jewellery sector.
The move follows a series of consultations and policy reviews. On August 8, 2025, Commerce Minister Jam Kamal Khan assured the All Pakistan Small Gems Jewellers & Tools Association (APSGJTA) that SRO 760 would be reinstated soon. He appreciated the industryβs recommendations and emphasized the need for clear regulations that support traders.
SRO 760(1) 2023, which outlined the legal framework for gems and jewellery exports, expired on July 8, 2025. The Federal Cabinet had earlier suspended it on May 2, 2025, forming a committee to review and suggest improvements. After five meetings, the committee finalized its report and sent it to the Prime Ministerβs Office in early July.
Following this, the Prime Ministerβs Office instructed the Commerce Ministry to seek feedback from private-sector stakeholders. The consultation led to full support from jewellery exporters for reinstating the regulatory framework.
The Commerce Ministry noted that no discrepancies were found in trade data during the previous regime. The matter was also discussed in the National Assembly Standing Committee on Commerce, where Chairman Jawed Hanif Khan urged for an immediate resolution.
With the Prime Ministerβs Office now in agreement, the ECCβs final approval is expected soon. This will officially reopen legal gold and jewellery trade in Pakistan, providing much-needed relief to traders and exporters across the country.
