Is This the End for Multan Sultans? PCBโ€™s Bold Move Shakes PSL Fans!

Is This the End for Multan Sultans? PCBโ€™s Bold Move Shakes PSL Fans!

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has officially issued a termination notice to the Pakistan Super League (PSL) franchise Multan Sultans for alleged violations of contractual obligations.

According to reports, the notice follows repeated public criticism by Multan Sultansโ€™ owner, Ali Tareen, who questioned the leagueโ€™s structure and management through podcasts and social media. The PCB initially remained silent, but the recent move indicates that the board has lost patience with the franchiseโ€™s actions.

Sources confirm that the PCBโ€™s notice could lead to serious consequences if the dispute remains unresolved. In that case, Multan Sultans may feature in the eleventh edition of the PSL under new ownership.

The PCB has also hired a foreign company to evaluate the current market value of all franchises, as the initial ten-year contracts have now ended. The evaluation process is nearly complete, and the board is reviewing whether all teams have complied with their agreements before taking further steps.

Multan Sultans, the most expensive team in the league, currently pays around Rs 1.25 billion annually. The franchise has faced heavy financial losses each season and has repeatedly demanded changes to the PSLโ€™s revenue and fee structure.

However, the PCB maintains that reducing fees for a single franchise could damage the leagueโ€™s credibility and affect the sale of future teams.

If the termination is finalized, the current ownership group of Multan Sultans will be barred from bidding for any new PSL franchise.

The team first joined the PSL in 2017 as the sixth franchise, initially owned by Schon Properties, whose deal was terminated in 2018 due to non-payment. Later that year, Ali and Alamgir Tareen acquired the rights. After Alamgirโ€™s passing in 2023, Ali Tareen resumed management.

The next PSL season will also see a scheduling change, likely moving to April or May 2026 because of the ICC T20 World Cup, potentially clashing with the IPL once again.
