Pakistan is preparing to approve its E-Commerce Policy 2.0, a major step toward expanding the countryโs digital trade to $20 billion by 2030. The new policy aims to promote online business growth, strengthen consumer protection, and introduce transparent standards for e-commerce operations.
The announcement came during a meeting between Federal Minister for Commerce Jam Kamal Khan and a delegation from Meta, where both sides discussed cooperation in e-commerce, artificial intelligence (AI), and digital trade development.
Minister Jam Kamal Khan highlighted that Pakistan is among South Asiaโs fastest-growing digital economies, producing more than 75,000 IT graduates every year. He added that the countryโs IT and IT-enabled services exports have increased by 18 percent, reaching $3.8 billion. In the first quarter of the current fiscal year alone, exports surged 21 percent to $1.06 billion.
The minister invited Meta to collaborate on developing AI ethics, digital safety, and transparent e-commerce standards. He emphasized that such partnerships will protect consumers and ensure fair business practices in Pakistanโs online marketplace.
He also pointed to the countryโs growing focus on technology through initiatives like the National AI Policy 2025 and the Digital Pakistan Act, both of which aim to modernize governance and enhance youth employability. Jam Kamal Khan encouraged Meta to support AI and digital skilling programs to prepare young Pakistanis for global opportunities.
Metaโs Director for Emerging Markets, Rafael Frankel, praised Pakistanโs digital progress and expressed interest in supporting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and entrepreneurs through digital training programs.
Both sides agreed to strengthen cooperation in innovation, create a secure digital ecosystem, and use technology to promote sustainable economic growth. The upcoming E-Commerce Policy 2.0 is expected to play a key role in transforming Pakistanโs digital economy over the next decade.
