Pakistan and Bangladesh have officially launched a direct shipping service between Karachi and Chittagong, marking a major step toward enhancing regional trade. The new route significantly reduces delivery times, lowers costs, and improves overall trade efficiency between the two South Asian nations.
Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar shared the development in a written reply to the National Assembly, highlighting the governmentβs efforts to strengthen economic and trade relations with Bangladesh. According to Dar, the direct shipping link has cut delivery times from 23 days to just 10 days, greatly improving logistical performance and business convenience.
In addition to the shipping initiative, Bangladesh has lifted its 100% inspection requirement for Pakistani exports at its ports, effective from September 29, 2024. The move, described by Dar as a βbreakthrough in bilateral trade facilitation,β is expected to make Pakistani goods more competitive by reducing customs delays and increasing mutual trust between the two countries.
The 9th Joint Economic Session (JEC), held in Dhaka on October 27, focused on expanding trade, investment, and connectivity. During this meeting, both nations reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening economic cooperation and exploring new avenues for partnership.
Following a trade agreement signed in January 2025, Pakistan has already exported 50,000 metric tons of rice to Bangladesh as part of a 200,000 metric ton export deal. Further shipments are expected in the coming months, reflecting growing confidence and collaboration in the agricultural sector.
