Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) chief Hafiz Naeemur Rehman has announced a nationwide strike against rising inflation and the petroleum levy.
He said the party would hold a countrywide strike on September 3. The announcement came during his interaction with the media.
Hafiz Naeem said JI workers were preparing for the upcoming protest. He added that meetings were being held with traders across the country.
The JI chief said traders would play an important role in the planned strike. He urged businesses and citizens to support the protest movement.
He also highlighted recent political activities organized by the party. According to Hafiz Naeem, JI held a large public gathering in Faisalabad.
He said another public meeting would be held in Rawalpindi on Sunday. The party plans to increase public participation before the nationwide strike.
JI has been protesting against the petroleum levy and rising inflation. The party says increasing costs are placing additional pressure on ordinary citizens.
Hafiz Naeem said the government’s exorbitant spending was adding to the public burden. He criticized what he described as unnecessary government expenditure.
“Our sit-ins are the scream of the nation,” Hafiz Naeem said. He maintained that the protests reflected public frustration over economic difficulties.
The JI leader said his party was prepared for prolonged sit-ins. He added that the protest campaign would continue until the government addresses public concerns.
Hafiz Naeem also claimed that pressure was being placed on the party regarding a wheel-jam strike. He said JI would continue discussing its future protest strategy.
The party is also considering a long march. Hafiz Naeem said a formal call for the march would be announced soon.
He said JI was working on preparations for the countrywide strike. The party also plans to move toward Islamabad as part of its campaign.
