Police in Karachi have recovered a stolen camera distribution box from the Safe City surveillance system near Bilawal House. The recovery was confirmed on Thursday.
The distribution box, part of the Karachi Safe City project, was reported stolen on November 6, 2025. The Safe City Authority informed the Boat Basin Police Station about the theft, but no formal case was immediately registered. The incident gained wider attention a week later when media reports highlighted the missing equipment.
Authorities said the stolen camera box was found abandoned in a vacant plot close to its original installation site. Investigations are ongoing to determine how it was removed and left there. CCTV footage from nearby locations is being reviewed to identify suspects and reconstruct the incident.
DIG South Syed Asad Raza stated that the box had been installed at a considerable height, making it unlikely for a single person to remove it. He also clarified that the cameras connected to the box were non-functional at the time of the theft.
“Eyewitnesses reported seeing individuals tampering with the distribution box from a moving vehicle,” DIG Raza said. He added that the absence of an alarm system delayed the discovery of the theft, making it difficult to pinpoint the exact time and date.
Police are now relying on eyewitness accounts and CCTV footage to trace the culprits behind the stolen camera box. The authorities described the incident as a serious security concern, raising questions about the safety and reliability of the Safe City system.
The theft has also sparked reactions on social media. Users expressed both concern and humor over the situation, with some jokingly suggesting extra chains or protection for the surveillance cameras.
Officials have assured the public that measures are being taken to prevent similar incidents in the future, emphasizing the importance of securing critical infrastructure under the Safe City initiative.
