Islamabad: Transporters across the country have announced fare hikes for passengers and freight after the government increased diesel prices. Officials from transport unions said the adjustments were necessary to offset rising fuel costs.
Public transport operators, including buses, vans, and freight carriers, confirmed that fares would increase by 10โ15% in major cities and highways. Commuters are likely to face higher travel costs starting this week, while goods transporters warned that prices of essential commodities could also rise due to increased logistics costs.
Transport associations urged the government to consider subsidies or relief measures to reduce the burden on ordinary citizens. Meanwhile, authorities emphasized that fuel price adjustments are based on global oil market trends and are aimed at maintaining the financial stability of the transport sector.
Economists noted that repeated fuel price hikes often have a ripple effect, impacting transportation, goods pricing, and overall inflation. Passengers expressed frustration over the rising cost of travel but acknowledged that transporters were left with little choice given soaring diesel prices.
The government has urged transporters to avoid overcharging and ensure fare hikes remain reasonable while monitoring compliance across the country.
