‘No Balance, No Electricity’: Pakistani to Launch Prepaid Meters in System Overhaul

‘No Balance, No Electricity’ Pakistani to Launch Prepaid Meters in System Overhaul

ISLAMABAD – The federal government has begun work on a major shift in the country’s electricity system through the nationwide rollout of Prepaid Meters, aiming to change how millions of people use and pay for power.

According to local reports, the new project introduces a system similar to mobile phone recharge. Consumers will buy electricity in advance using a rechargeable card linked to their Prepaid Meters. They will add balance to the card and then consume electricity according to their budget and usage needs.

Once the balance reaches zero, the electricity supply will automatically turn off. Under this model, traditional meter reading will end. There will be no monthly bills, no delays in payment, and no late fees. The entire system will run on the simple principle of “recharge to use.”

Officials say the introduction of Prepaid Meters will give consumers greater control over their spending. Instead of waiting for monthly bills, users will be able to manage their electricity consumption in real time. This approach, the government believes, will reduce billing disputes and improve transparency.

To move the project forward, the federal government has sent formal letters to the heads of all power distribution companies. These companies have been asked to submit recommendations and technical proposals for the nationwide prepaid system before the end of the month.

Authorities claim the new system will reduce operational costs by eliminating manual meter reading and lowering the chances of electricity theft. It may also help power companies improve revenue collection by ensuring payment before consumption.

The project is still in its early phase, but the government aims to implement it in stages after reviewing feedback from power companies. Once approved, the prepaid model will gradually replace traditional meters in households and businesses across the country.
