Dhaka: Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has issued her first public response after being handed a death sentence, calling the tribunal’s verdict “rigged” and politically motivated.
In her statement delivered through her legal team, Hasina said the trial lacked transparency and fairness. She claimed that the proceedings were influenced by political pressure and designed to silence her permanently.
Hasina, who has faced multiple charges since leaving office, maintained that she is innocent and that the case against her was built on weak evidence and biased testimonies. Her lawyers echoed these concerns, stating that the trial violated basic legal procedures and denied her a proper defense.
The verdict has sparked strong reactions both within Bangladesh and internationally. Supporters of Hasina condemned the ruling, calling it an attack on democracy and political dissent. Opposition groups, however, argue that the sentence reflects accountability for actions during her tenure.
Human rights organizations have expressed concern, urging the Bangladeshi government to ensure due process and transparency. Several global observers have also called for an independent review of the case.
The Bangladeshi government has not yet issued a detailed response to Hasina’s allegations but insists that the trial was conducted according to law.
As appeals are prepared, the case is expected to further increase political tensions in the country, with analysts warning of potential public unrest in the coming days.
