Pakistan, Malaysia Agree To Cement Digital Cooperation At Baku Conference

Pakistan and Malaysia have agreed to strengthen collaboration in the digital sector, reaffirming their commitment to innovation and technological growth. The understanding to cement digital cooperation was reached during a meeting between Federal Minister for Information Technology Shaza Fatima Khawaja and Malaysiaโ€™s Minister of Communications Ahmad Fahmi bin Mohamed Fadzil. The discussion took place on the sidelines of the World Telecommunication Development Conference in Baku, Azerbaijan.

Both delegations praised the strong bilateral partnership between the two countries. They described the relationship as longstanding and strategic, highlighting the importance of digital transformation in shaping future economic ties. The decision to cement digital cooperation reflects their shared goals of building modern, efficient, and technology-driven systems.

Shaza Fatima noted that Pakistanโ€™s digital vision aligns closely with Malaysiaโ€™s MyDigital Blueprint. She said both countries are focused on similar targets, including the expansion of digital services and the promotion of advanced technologies. She proposed launching a Pakistanโ€“Malaysia Digital Policy Dialogue to formalize discussions and strengthen joint initiatives.

The minister emphasized the need to cement digital cooperation through talent mobility and capacity-building programs. She highlighted fields such as artificial intelligence, data science, and the Internet of Things as key areas where both nations can benefit from shared expertise and training opportunities.

During the meeting, Shaza Fatima also discussed Pakistanโ€™s progress in formulating its national Artificial Intelligence (AI) policy. Speaking at a separate event in Islamabad, she said the AI policy was developed after extensive consultations. She stressed that the government would now prioritize its implementation to accelerate technological development.

She added that embracing new technologies was essential for Pakistanโ€™s long-term growth. Although Pakistan currently lacks an AI-specific regulatory structure, several initiatives and draft policies are being developed at the ministry level to address potential challenges linked to AI use.

The renewed efforts to cement digital cooperation are expected to open new avenues for innovation, skills development, and digital economic growth between Pakistan and Malaysia.
