Police on Sunday dispersed a sit-in by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) workers at the Gorakhpur checkpoint. During the operation, Aleema Khanum, Azma Khan, and Noreen Niazi, PTI founder’s sisters, were taken into custody.
Authorities said a scuffle broke out between police and PTI activists during the dispersal. Alongside the PTI founder’s sisters, Qasim Khan and 20 other PTI workers were also arrested.
The arrested individuals were transported to Chakri Interchange for further legal proceedings. Police emphasized that the operation aimed to prevent prolonged protests on major roads in Rawalpindi.
The development comes amid rising tensions between PTI supporters and government authorities. Security forces have been actively monitoring public gatherings to maintain law and order.
Earlier, Senator Faisal Vawda criticized PTI for its role in the recent 27th Constitutional Amendment. He stated that PTI had helped the government pass the amendment with a two-thirds majority in the Senate.
“PTI makes big claims but delivers nothing. They mislead people, and now their real faces have been revealed before the nation,” Vawda said. He added that no opposition members opposed the amendment, indicating it passed with joint consensus.
Vawda further remarked that PTI senators failed to vote where opposition votes were expected but supported the government when required. “They exposed themselves by their own conduct,” he added.
He also praised PTI Senator Saifullah Abro for voting in favor of the 27th Constitutional Amendment, calling it a fulfillment of his national duty. “Such people deserve appreciation,” Vawda said.
The arrests of PTI founder’s sisters have intensified the political debate, with supporters condemning the action while authorities defend it as a measure to ensure public safety. The government has reiterated its stance on maintaining order during political gatherings.
This incident highlights ongoing tensions between PTI and the authorities, as political and legal developments continue to unfold in Pakistan.
