Army deployed in Punjab

The Punjab government is deploying army troops to control the situation on the ground as political tensions continue to rise following the dramatic arrest of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chairman (PTI) Imran Khan.

The Ministry of Interior has sanctioned ten companies of troops in response to the Punjab government’s request for assistance, stating that “the army would work alongside district administration to restore law, order, and peace.”

According to the order issued by the Federal Ministry of Interior, stated: “In response to the Home Department Government of Punjab’s request, in accordance with their letter No.SO(IS-II)3-15/2023 (Security) (1) On May 9, 2023, the federal government exercised powers granted by Article 245.

Section 4 (3) (ii) of the Anti-Terrorism Act 1997 (to discharge such functions as specified in the said act), is pleased to authorise the deployment of Pakistan Army troops/assets for maintaining law and order situation across Punjab province in aid of civil power.

The provincial government will determine the exact number of troops/assets, date, and area of deployment in consultation with the MO Dte, GHQ.

The date of de-requisition of said deployment will be determined later after mutual consultation between both stakeholders.
