Punjab Govt Faces Pressure as Sugar and Flour Prices Surge

Prices of essential food items in Punjab have sharply increased, causing concern among citizens. Sugar and flour, two key household staples, are now weighing heavily on consumers’ budgets.

According to traders, the price of a 20-kilogram flour bag has jumped by Rs300 in just two weeks. Flour per kilogram has also risen by Rs15, adding to the financial burden of daily wage earners. This surge follows a steep rise in wheat prices, which climbed from Rs2,300 per maund to Rs2,800.

Sugar prices remain another challenge. In local markets, sugar is being sold at Rs200 per kilogram, significantly higher than the official rate of Rs175 set by the government. Despite efforts to regulate prices, the gap between official and market rates continues to widen.

Citizens have voiced strong concerns over the unchecked inflation. Many families are struggling to manage household expenses and have urged immediate intervention to control the situation. The rise in staple food prices has become a growing issue for both rural and urban populations.

The Punjab govt has been under increasing pressure to stabilize the market and take strict action against profiteering. Officials are expected to intensify monitoring of markets in an effort to ensure availability of flour and sugar at official rates.

Economic experts warn that if prices remain unchecked, inflation could further impact middle- and lower-income groups. They stress that timely action by the Punjab govt is essential to protect consumers from further hardship.

For now, families in Punjab continue to face uncertainty as food costs climb, with hopes pinned on government measures to bring relief.
