RIYADH: Saudi Arabia has officially launched Google Pay in the Kingdom through its national payment network, Mada. The service was introduced by the Saudi Central Bank (SAMA) and announced at the Money 20/20 Middle East Conference in Riyadh.
Google Pay enables users to make secure and convenient payments using the βTap to Payβ feature. This will work not only in physical stores but will soon be extended to apps and websites.
The platform also allows users to add and manage their mada cards, as well as global credit cards such as Visa and Mastercard, directly within the Google Wallet application.
With this launch, Google Pay offers consumers multiple layers of security. Payments are processed using tokenization technology. Instead of transmitting actual card details, transactions are completed with a unique virtual card number, or token. Each token is device-specific and linked to a dynamic security code that changes for every transaction, ensuring safety.
SAMA stated that the launch of Google Pay reflects its commitment to expanding digital payment services in Saudi Arabia. The move is seen as part of broader efforts to support financial innovation and reduce reliance on cash.
Officials emphasized that the introduction of Google Pay is expected to enhance convenience for businesses and individuals alike. By offering a faster and safer payment method, the service aligns with the Kingdomβs ongoing push toward a cashless economy.
The launches of advanced payment solutions like Google Pay also highlight Saudi Arabiaβs growing role in digital transformation across the Middle East. Experts believe this step will further strengthen the local fintech ecosystem and encourage more global companies to bring innovative services to the Kingdom.
