Coursera, a leading US edutech platform, reported a surge in user sign-ups for its artificial intelligence courses in 2023, revealing an average of one new user per minute. The platform’s CEO, Jeff Maggioncalda, highlighted the growing interest in upskilling, particularly in generative AI, driven by advancements like OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

Despite initial investor concerns that generative AI applications might replace ed-tech firms, it appears that the technology has spurred increased demand for education and upskilling.

Coursera offers over 800 AI courses and recorded more than 7.4 million enrollments in 2023, with each student gaining access to a ChatGPT-like AI assistant named “Coach.”

Coursera plans to collaborate with leading AI companies, including OpenAI and Google’s DeepMind, to offer high-quality AI courses. The platform has leveraged generative AI for course translations and intends to expand its hiring for AI roles in the coming year.
