Now that Cillian Murphy has received the Oscar he rightfully deserves, he is set to return to what cemented his place in the hearts of fans worldwide: portraying Tommy Shelby and ruling the streets of 1900s Birmingham.
In March, Peaky Blinders’ creator and executive producer Steven Knight sparked hope by discussing plans for a Peaky Blinders movie. Fans were cautiously optimistic, awaiting official confirmation from any production house. According to Deadline, Netflix has now officially greenlit the Peaky Blinders feature film, bringing Murphy back as the clan’s fearless leader.
The last time we saw the Peaky Blinders crew, Tommy Shelby had seemingly settled his scores, killing his cousin Michael (Finn Cole). After handing over the family business to his sister Ada (Sophie Rundle), Tommy rode off into the sunset on a white horse in a seemingly perfect ending. However, the story isn’t over. “It seems like Tommy Shelby wasn’t finished with me,” Murphy said in a conversation with the publication. Murphy expressed his excitement about reuniting with Steven Knight and Tom Harper, adding, “This is one for the fans.”

Details on the casting and plot of the untitled film remain under wraps, but with Murphy back in the lead and Knight crafting the script, fans can expect to be dazzled. Knight had previously mentioned that the film would be set during World War II, describing it as “an explosive chapter in the Peaky Blinders story” and promising a “full-on Peaky Blinders at war.”
Tom Harper, known for Heart of Stone, The Aeronauts, and War & Peace, will direct the film. Harper is familiar with the Peaky Blinders universe, having directed the latter half of Season 1. Harper commented on the reunion, saying, “Peaky has always been a story about family — and so it’s incredibly exciting to be reuniting with Steve and Cillian to bring the movie to audiences across the world on Netflix.”
Production is slated to begin later this year, in association with BBC Film. Producers Caryn Mandabach, Steven Knight, Cillian Murphy, and Guy Heeley will helm the project, with Harper, David Kosse, Jamie Glazebrook, Andrew Warren, and David Mason serving as executive producers.
Peaky Blinders initially aired in 2013 on BBC Two in the UK, with Netflix joining in 2014. The series’ popularity led to its move from BBC Two to BBC One in 2019 after winning the BAFTA for Best Drama. The show ran for six seasons, culminating in 2022, and its cinematic continuation promises to be a thrilling addition to the Peaky Blinders saga.
