Fans express their fury over the alleged marital rape scenario, with the hashtag “Shame on Tere Bin makers” trending on Twitter.

You must be a caveman if you haven’t heard of the Pakistani show Tere Bin. The drama has gained a lot of popularity since it started airing on Geo TV in December, not just in Pakistan but also internationally. Its episodes have often trended at the top spot on YouTube in India, demonstrating its appeal on a global scale.

Wahaj Ali and Yumna Zaidi are the stars of the Siraj ul Haq-directed play. As someone who is accustomed to live life on her own terms, Meerab (played by Zaidi) rejects both the superfluous social boundaries and the traditions of Murtasim (played by Ali) and his family. The conflict-filled story centres on how they will get over their disagreements.

At least, this is how the drama was till Meerab and Murtasim’s misunderstandings between them turned into a continual back and forth in the last several episodes.

Fans who were still smitten with the characters’ connection kept hoping for their reunion. Three days ago, when episode 46 of the drama aired, it was trending once more. But this time, it did so for all the wrong reasons, and it took over the internet.

At the end of the aforementioned episode, Meerab spat on Murtasim’s face and gave him a smack. Murtasim reacted angrily, forcing Meerab into the bed before shutting the door. The audience was offended by the sequence’s suggestion that there would be a rape or assault in marriage in the upcoming show.

This notion is further supported by the preview for the upcoming episode, which depicts Meerab sitting angrily. Fans have gone crazy with the characters’ rapid escalation and the act’s triggering nature. People are outraged by the use of rape as a story element and the normalisation of the crime in a culture where victims of rape seldom obtain justice. It is completely unacceptable to have a beloved and hugely famous figure rape his wife and then receive forgiveness – many are wondering and afraid that this may occur.

Fans have been using the hashtag “shame on Tere Bin makers” on Twitter for days, and who can blame them?
