Single-Use Plastics (Prohibition) Regulations 2023 were presented by Senator Sherry Rehman, the federal minister for climate change. As they seek to lessen negative effects on human health and the environment, facilitate the transition to a circular economy, improve solid waste management systems, shift responsibility to polluters, and encourage sustainable practises, the regulations represent a significant step in the fight against plastic pollution, according to the minister. A timeframe for the prohibition of certain single-use plastic products is included in the rules.

Single-use plastic cutlery, comprising forks, knives, spoons, and chopsticks, as well as single-use plastic crockery, including plates, bowls, cups, and glasses, will no longer be accepted as of August 1, 2023. Also included are single-use plastic foodservice items such lidded containers, cartons, cups, plates, and bowls that are used to serve or convey food or beverages.
