The culture war in the United States has taken a new turn, this time involving streaming giant Netflix. Billionaire Elon Musk has weighed in on the controversy, drawing widespread attention online.
The issue began when comments from Hamish Steele, creator of the 2022 Netflix animated series Dead End: Paranormal Park, resurfaced on social media. Steele allegedly mocked the death of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk, referring to him as a “random nazi.” His remarks quickly went viral, sparking backlash.
Following the outrage, Steele made his account on X private. On another platform, BlueSky, he denied celebrating Kirk’s death but admitted his social media pages were flooded with angry responses.
Elon Musk soon joined the debate. He reposted a user’s message about cancelling their Netflix subscription and added the word “same,” implying that he too was cutting ties with the service. His post gained more than 200,000 likes, amplifying calls for a boycott.
Attention then shifted to Steele’s animated show. The series, aimed at children, featured a main character who is a Jewish transgender teenager. In one scene, the character openly shares his identity and stresses the importance of living authentically. Critics described this as an attempt to promote a “transgender agenda,” intensifying the backlash.
Despite the controversy, it is worth noting that the series ended in 2022 after just two seasons. Netflix had already cancelled the show, and it is no longer in production.
The debate highlights ongoing tensions over cultural representation in media, with Netflix once again at the center of public discussion. As streaming platforms continue to shape entertainment, they also remain at the heart of broader social and political debates.
