Govt Moves to Ease Electricity Bills for Flood-Hit Citizens

Govt Announces 70% Electricity Bill Relief in Pakistan

The government of Pakistan has announced major relief measures for people affected by the 2025 floods. Both federal and provincial authorities have introduced concessions on electricity bills and financial support programs for victims.

Federal Energy Minister Awais Leghari confirmed that flood-hit citizens will receive discounts of up to 70% on their electricity bills. Extended payment deadlines have also been approved to give residents more time to manage their expenses. The minister noted that around 18 million consumers nationwide are already benefiting from the 70% discount.

Power supply restoration is also a priority. Authorities are working to reconnect flood-damaged areas, including districts served by the Faisalabad Electric Supply Company (FESCO). These efforts aim to stabilize electricity access in heavily affected regions.

In Punjab, Finance Minister Mujtaba Shuja-ur-Rehman announced additional support measures. A comprehensive relief package is being designed to cover housing, agriculture, and rehabilitation needs. The provincial government has included flood victims in the β€œApni Chhat, Apna Ghar” housing scheme to ensure permanent shelter.

Financial assistance will also be extended for damaged homes, crops, and livestock. Farmers are set to receive a separate support package, while land revenue charges in disaster-hit areas will be waived. Temporary shelters and aid for re-cultivation of land are also part of the provincial plan. A high-level committee has been formed to survey affected families and prioritize those in greatest need.

Flood damage continues to disrupt lives in many districts, especially Faisalabad, Kasur, Multan, and Bahawalpur. Political leaders, including Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, have urged the federal government to expand relief by fully waiving electricity bills for farmers.

The combined efforts of federal and provincial governments reflect a large-scale attempt to reduce the financial pressure on affected families. These measures highlight the government’s focus on electricity bill relief for flood-hit Pakistan while also addressing housing and agricultural recovery.
