Lionel Messi, one of the greatest footballers of all time, has revealed that while he dreams of playing in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, his participation will ultimately depend on how his body holds up ahead of the tournament.
The 38-year-old Inter Miami star, who captained Argentina to victory in the 2022 World Cup, shared his thoughts in an interview with NBC News, saying he would evaluate his physical condition during next year’s preseason before making a final decision.
“It’s something extraordinary to be able to be in a World Cup and I would love to,” Messi said. “I want to be there, to be well and be an important part of helping my national team, if I am there.”
Messi emphasized that his focus is on maintaining fitness and being fully capable of contributing to Argentina’s title defense. He noted that the decision will come down to whether he feels he can be “100%” and “useful” to the team.
“I’m going to assess that on a day-to-day basis when I start preseason next year with Inter and see if I can really be 100%, if I can be useful to the group, to the national team, and then make a decision,” he explained.
Having played professionally since 2004, Messi continues to inspire millions with his passion and longevity. He described the idea of defending the World Cup title as “spectacular,” adding that the motivation to represent Argentina remains as strong as ever.

“We’re coming off winning the last World Cup, and being able to defend it on the field again is spectacular because it’s always a dream to play with the national team, especially in official competitions,” Messi added.
Currently based in Miami, the Argentine legend reflected on his life in the U.S. following his move to Major League Soccer in 2023.
“The truth is that I like everything about living here,” he said. “Miami allows us to live very well, enjoy life, and be calm. The kids can be themselves and live day to day.”
Messi has made 195 appearances for Argentina, scoring 114 goals—a record that cements his place among football’s all-time greats. While fans around the world eagerly await his decision, one thing is certain: Messi’s legacy in world football is already eternal.
