Islamabad β October 9, 2025:
Former senator Mushtaq Ahmed has returned to Pakistan after being released from Israeli custody following his participation in the Global Sumud Flotilla, a humanitarian mission aimed at supporting Palestinians in Gaza.
According to details, Mushtaq Ahmed arrived in Islamabad from Amman on a private airline flight and received a warm welcome at Islamabad International Airport. Supporters, colleagues, and family members greeted him with flowers and slogans of solidarity, celebrating his safe return home.
Detention During the Global Sumud Flotilla
Mushtaq Ahmed was among nearly 450 international participants aboard the Global Sumud Flotilla that set sail to challenge Israelβs blockade on Gaza and deliver symbolic aid. The flotilla included activists, journalists, and humanitarian workers from various countries. However, the convoy was intercepted by Israeli forces in international waters between Wednesday and Friday last week.
Reports from international media revealed that the activists were detained and later deported after facing harsh treatment during custody. Several participants alleged they were harassed, deprived of food, and subjected to humiliation while under Israeli detention. Italian activist Cesare Tofani, upon his return to Rome, told reporters, βWe were treated terribly, from the army to the police,β describing the experience as degrading and inhumane.
Widespread Reaction and Global Condemnation
The detention sparked international criticism, with human rights organizations and political leaders condemning Israelβs handling of the flotilla participants. The operation was described by many as a violation of international law, given that the interception occurred in international waters.
Analysts note that Mushtaq Ahmedβs involvement reflects Pakistanβs continued support for the Palestinian cause. His participation in the flotilla and subsequent treatment have reignited public debate about humanitarian activism and the risks faced by those challenging the Gaza blockade.
As of now, the former senator has not issued a detailed public statement but expressed gratitude to the people of Pakistan for their prayers and support during his ordeal.
