Punjab Launches Coblation Cancer Treatment, Offering Alternative to Chemotherapy

Punjab has achieved a historic milestone in healthcare with the launch of its first modern coblation cancer treatment facility, a breakthrough alternative to traditional surgery and chemotherapy. The new centre will officially open at Lahore’s Mayo Hospital, with Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz set to inaugurate the service on Thursday.

Breakthrough in cancer care

For the first time in Punjab, cancer patients will have access to coblation technology, a Chinese-developed treatment considered safer and more effective than conventional methods. The system uses electrical heat to destroy tumour tissues, significantly reducing pain and allowing faster recovery compared to surgery or chemotherapy.

Doctors at Mayo Hospital have already reported successful results. In two key cases, a patient with a tumour blocking arteries to the liver and another with breast cancer responded well to coblation therapy, highlighting its potential as a game-changer in cancer treatment.

Advanced machinery and training from China

The provincial government imported state-of-the-art machinery from China to establish the coblation centre. The equipment has now been installed, and doctors and medical staff have completed training ahead of the official launch.

Experts describe coblation as a revolutionary step that will expand treatment options and improve patient outcomes. Unlike chemotherapy, which often brings severe side effects, coblation provides a non-invasive approach with minimal discomfort and faster healing.

How coblation works

The procedure targets cancerous tissues with precise electrical heat, ensuring effective treatment while reducing risks associated with surgery. Patients benefit from shorter recovery times and less pain, making it an attractive option for those battling lung, liver, or breast cancers.

Doctors welcome innovation

Mayo Hospital specialists have praised the new centre as a major leap forward in Punjab’s cancer care. They believe this technology will not only transform treatment options locally but also set new standards in healthcare innovation for Pakistan.
