LAHORE – Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Rana Sanaullah has won the Senate by-election in Punjab with a decisive victory, according to unofficial results. The by-election was held to fill the seat vacated by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Senator Ejaz Chaudhry, who was disqualified following his conviction in the May 9 cases.
Polling took place at the Punjab Assembly from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with a total of 251 votes cast. Only one ballot was rejected during the counting process. To secure a win, a candidate needed at least 181 votes. Rana Sanaullah comfortably surpassed this threshold, receiving 250 votes.
The opposition, led by PTI, had nominated Salma Ejaz, wife of the disqualified senator. However, they later decided to boycott the voting. As a result, Salma Ejaz did not receive any votes, making Rana Sanaullah’s victory overwhelming and uncontested.
Provincial Election Commissioner and Returning Officer Sharifullah formally announced the results after completing the vote count. The ruling alliance, which includes PML-N, Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), PML-Q, and other partners, supported Sanaullah’s candidacy. This united backing ensured his commanding win in the Punjab Assembly.
Political analysts note that this victory strengthens PML-N’s position in the Senate and enhances its influence over legislative proceedings. It also reflects the current political dynamics in Punjab, where the ruling coalition holds a clear majority.
Rana Sanaullah’s win in the Rana Sanaullah Senate by-election Punjab marks a significant moment in the country’s political landscape. It not only reinforces the party’s presence but also highlights the challenges faced by PTI in maintaining its political influence after recent legal setbacks.
